How an East Coast Oyster Brand Found the Perfect Cold Chain Pairing

At Periwrap, we work with clients from a diverse range of industries to develop custom packaging that fits each business’ unique needs. In the following case study, we share how we helped an East Coast oyster brand build a cold chain solution that kept their product fresh, their packaging sustainable, and their customers coming back for more.

A well-known oyster company on the East Coast faced a challenge familiar to many in the shellfish world: how to ship fresh oysters direct-to-consumer without compromising product quality or environmental values.

Oysters are delicate, high-moisture, and highly perishable — and shipping them long distances in a way that maintains temperature control, prevents leaking, and keeps packaging waste low is no small feat. The client needed a solution that balanced performance with sustainability, and that could be scaled as their customer base grew.

That’s where we came in. Through testing and collaboration, we helped them build a cold chain packaging system centered around Polycool liners paired with ThermaBags. The Polycool liners, made from 85% post-consumer recycled materials, delivered insulation that stood up to 2-day transit windows. The ThermaBags offered a secondary layer of protection, locking in temperature while also absorbing moisture and preventing condensation from reaching the outer box.

Together, this combo delivered a reliable, cost-effective solution that kept the oysters cold, safe, and fresh — all while reducing packaging waste. As the client expanded shipping volume, the simplicity of the pack-out and curbside recyclability of materials became key advantages.

By choosing a system that worked as well for the planet as it did for their product, this oyster shipper proved that premium seafood can travel far — without sacrificing freshness, customer experience or environmental responsibility.
